What were the window frames originally coloured?

A new resident recently posed this query:

Before the last paint scheme of orange, for all the old window frames, what were their 'original' colours?

Today, we have a mix of white and grey - based on residents' preference I guess, and in keeping with the repainting scheme.

Can anyone share their recollections?

The old period B&W photo does not give enough of clues.

  1. I discovered the orange underlayer when the paint remover dripped down.

In my childhood deco home built in the 1930s, the window casements were unpainted, steel, complimenting the streamlined railings on the balcony. After 5 decades of rain and shine, and charcoal cooking, by my army days in the late 80s, they acquired a dark patina of orange russet deepened by sooty oxide.

Tiong Bahru underwent a pinkish-orange postmodern upliftment in the 90s, and I guess this is a reminant.
